Cosmo is my black and white spotted Syrian hamster and such a character!
I adopted him from Petsmart.
Sometimes PM will take hamsters that no one wants or can care for anymore and sometimes those hamsters are pregnant, so they keep them in the back until they can be adopted for free.
I get most of the hamsters I have had this way. They only sell male animals at PM.
Honestly, I wish they did not sell animals at all, but at least they are only selling one sex.
So one of the sales associates brings out this aquarium just swarming with baby hamsters. And because of Cosmos' coloring I saw him first. I went to touch him and he started squealing and screeching. It was pitiful! And of course that just made me want him because he was sassy.
Cosmo has been with us for about a year and has not stopped his screeching, but is very tame. If you pet him, he screeches, if you feed him, he screeches. I think he likes to hear himself talk. Cosmo loves to be in his ball. We set him lose in it in the den at night so we can keep an eye on him, but he is so funny to watch. Hamsters can only see about 1" in front of them. They have very bad eye sight, so he runs into everything full throttle. The dog, our feet, the cat, the rabbit, the TV stand, bang! boom! MEOW!! It's a blast to watch him gets such treacherous exercise! He loves every minute of it.
Poppy has gotten very big and is doing very well. She has so much personality. She is so sassy ans so comical. She loves her rabbit friend Nevin and loves to be brushed. Weird for a Guinea pig. She is now 3 1/2 months old as of last Wednesday. Here she sits in her half eaten hay tunnel.
I built her a bigger playpen once Nevin decided he wasn't going to stay in it. He will jump back in for a bite of pellets or to use the littler box, play with Poppy but other wise, he likes free range of the den. You can see him in the background. He is the grey blob with the satanic eye!!
Poppy loves her pen and runs around like she is on a race track. She always runs through her tunnel each lap. Even if she has to zig-zag to get through it! Hay and bedding go everywhere!!
This enclosure is made from a piece of corrugated plastic (An old real estate sign that was given to me) and metal grids used for shelves. Zip ties do the trick and tape or staples hold the plastic together. It is easy to clean and so much more inexpensive then a cage. Plus you can get the plastic in any color and make the cage as big as you want as the plastic comes in sheets of 8' X 4'. You can get creative and do multiple levels and even put a roof on it. She sleeps in her apartment in the "animal room" at night right across from Nevin and next to Cosmo.
